After Laura hauls Derek off to New York without even bothering to make sure their uncle is safe, because "but, Laura, there were hunters, and he's in the hospital under his actual name!" and "it's fine, Derek, Deaton will take care of it, we have to get out of here." but Peter was close to the siblings in age, more an older brother than uncle, and while the rest of the pack always had a tendency to treat Peter like an outsider because of his position as Left Hand, Derek liked Peter. Peter always made time for Derek unlike his own parents who were busy with Alpha stuff or their jobs and Laura was getting ready for college and Cora was just getting into grade school, and he didn't mind if Derek was quiet sometimes. So, after they'd made it to New York and gotten settled, and Derek has a cellphone again, he buys a phonecard with the money he makes from his after school job and calls the hospital asking about Peter Hale. To say he's very upset about the fact that Peter is in fact still there under his own name is an understatement, but he convinces the nurse to put the phone on the bed where he'd be able to hear Derek speaking, and just starts rambling, telling Peter about what happened with them, where they are, how he misses him and how it was all his fault. He tells Laura about Peter's condition and she tells him to stop worrying, obviously he's safe because they would have come after him by then otherwise, right. Derek doesn't believe it, but he continues the calls, twice a week, just for five minutes at a time, unable to afford much more than that, and over the weeksmonthsyears he can feel his bond with Peter still fragile, but there and getting stronger.
