Based on a prompt from writing-prompt-s on tumblr and the response from writingmyselfintoanearlygrave
Prompt: One day you lose your wallet, and it is found by a mob boss who figures out that you aren't in such a good place financially and takes pity on you. So they start anonymously sending cash, clothes, and furniture to you in the mail. Eventually, the mob boss sends you a letter stating that they bought you a house and the address. What do you do?
Response: In this economy? Thank them politely, pledge your loyalty, and join the mob.
So, yeah. I've had ideas on this one for a while. Originally planning for a Peter/Stiles one, but could also see it as a Tony Stark/(insert Marvel character here) too.
Setup for it, broke character is at a bus stop, maybe talking to their boss on a cellphone about the bus being late, and they'll be there as soon as they can and no they don't have money to get a taxi and please, it's out of their control, apparently there was a wreck and all the buses are running behind and... And it's either raining or obnoxiously hot and humid, just because they need to suffer more. They pull out their wallet to get their bus pass but when they go to put it in their pocket, in their rush, it misses and falls out. Mob boss was standing outside waiting for his driver to come around, also detained by the wreck, and has heard the poor guy stressing for several minutes. Seeing his wallet fall, he scoops it up and tries to call for the guy, but the bus door closes in a rush and he's left with the wallet. Later, he takes a look through the wallet, noticing a couple of pawn claim tickets and the lack of any credit cards and absolutely no cash. He remembers the threadbare bookbag the kid had been using as well as the clean, though obviously well worn, clothes he'd had on. Realizing how desperate the poor kid would probably be without his wallet, he hesitates only a minute before stuffing a couple hundred dollar bills inside and calling for his assistant to package up the wallet and send it via courier to the business he'd remembered seeing on the kid's nametag. Before sending it off, he makes a note of the name and the address and includes a note "Saw you drop this at the bus stop this morning. Hopefully this will make your week a little easier. - A good samaritan".
Having regular business at the same location, he winds up looking for the kid again, hears him talking on the phone to a friend about how much of a difference the extra money had made, how he was able to pay his rent and still buy actual fresh produce instead of the cheapest packaged noodles and canned food he could find, how he was able to get his mom's ring back from the pawn shop. Feeling content after seeing the kid so happy about something that had made no real difference to him, he decides to put the situation out of his mind. Except he keeps seeing the kid every time he has business at that location, finds out more of what's going on with him thanks to overheard conversations or listening to him talk to himself, watches as he starts to grow haggard looking and more stressed once again as time goes by. He decides to have someone look into the kid, see if he's just a loser who can't take care of himself and manage his money or if there's more to it. Finds out kid is basically orphaned (this actually pretty much works for Stiles, Steve, or Peter P. lol), living in a dump of an apartment, working at least two jobs, killing himself to try to pay back all the bills/whatever his family acquired from whatever killed them, or trying to pay the medical bills to take care of a relative. With the new information, he decides to step in again and suddenly the kid's "good samaritan" is arranging for grocery delivery, an occasional gift card to local cafes or restaurants "to treat yourself", a brand new coat and winter hat and gloves show up when it gets cold, a new backpack when his strap breaks, and on and on. For Christmas he finds out his rent and electric have been paid for the month. The kid is left trying to figure out who his benefactor is, nobody he knows has the kind of money that's being spent on him. He talks about wanting to thank his "samaritan" frequently, wishing he had a way to just send a thank you card if nothing else. Of course the mob boss hears and feels all warm and fuzzy.
Mob boss winds up either buying the apartment complex when he realizes exactly how much of a shithole it is and remodeling it, or just gets the kid another apartment and tells him his lease is getting canceled at the end of the month and it's time to move. Eventually one of the couriers is spotted by the kid and he stops them, begging them for information about who has been doing all this stuff for them. Eventually the two meet, sparks fly and everybody lives happily ever after.
