So, completely thought up from a random line from a Linkin Park song "struck me down when I kissed your ring". That was it, that one bit of line was what prompted a mostly thought out medieval all human AU in which King Giles and Queen (Anya maybe? don't think I decided on her) decide that their sons, the princes Liam and William, are in need of a whipping boy. Enter one young boy named Alexander, enough alike in looks to Liam to pass. Whereas Liam watches the innocent boy be punished for his own crimes and decides over time that not only does he not care, he finds it amusing, William finds it horrible and, after watching the boy be punished in his place, sets out to make sure he never does anything to cause it to happen again. Over time, as Xander is schooled and trained with the princes, he and William grow closer until they both fall in sweet first love with each other. Liam discovers this and informs his parents who decide that this can absolutely *not* happen and, since Xander was trained as a knight next to the princes, sent out to one of the furthest posts in the kingdom.
Time passes and Xander and William exchange letters, though it's usually only once a season that they're able to talk. William becomes a scholar, spending most of his time in the library with the monks researching and documenting. Liam, on the other hand, is out womanizing and gambling and just being the classic spoiled prince. Xander steadily rises through the ranks as he serves his time with the soldiers protecting the borders and helping those in the neighboring towns.
The queen dies and within the year, the king quickly follows, word going around that it was from a broken heart. Requesting a transfer back to the castle to pay his respects after finding out, Xander eventually makes his way back only to find that Liam, as cruel and petty as an adult as he was as a child, was appointed king. After a brief reunion with William in which Xander learns that the king's cause of death was a bit more suspect than was made known, he is called to swear his loyalty to the new king. As much as he hates the very idea, Xander knows it's the best way to keep those he cares for protected, so kneels and swears his vow to honor the king. As he's kneeling, after Liam basically insults him in front of everyone, he's suddenly seized from behind by other soldiers as Liam strikes him, the ring showing his station slicing across Xander's face. To a great uproar in the crowd, Liam declares him to be a traitor and has him hauled away, imprisoned in one of the same posts he'd used to protect.
As word travelled about what Liam had done, Xander, already beloved by the many towns he'd helped over the years, is soon freed by his fellow knights who have watched the kingdom fall into chaos thanks to Liam's unjust new laws. Xander returns with a virtual army of his own, and faces Liam. After winning, William is crowned king and appoints Xander as his personal guard, and though he never marries, everyone close to the two know that they stay faithful to each other for the rest of their days
